What Can Physiotherapy Do for You?

If you've been dealing with nagging pain, recovering from an injury, or just not moving as well as you used to, physiotherapy might be exactly what you need. At Locus Health Centre in East Vancouver, our registered physiotherapists work with patients of all ages and activity levels to help them get back to doing what they love.

What Is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a regulated healthcare profession focused on restoring and maintaining physical function and mobility. Physiotherapists assess the root cause of your pain or movement limitation and create a personalized treatment plan to address it — not just mask the symptoms.

Treatment may include hands-on manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, education, and modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation.

Common Conditions Physiotherapy Treats

You don't need to be an athlete or have a serious injury to benefit from physiotherapy. Our patients come to us with a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Back and neck pain — whether from sitting at a desk all day or a sudden strain
  • Sports injuries — sprains, strains, tendinopathies, and post-surgical rehab
  • Motor vehicle accident (MVA) injuries — whiplash, soft tissue injuries, and ICBC-covered care
  • Joint pain — knee, hip, shoulder, and ankle issues
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation — getting you back to full function after an operation
  • Headaches and TMJ disorders — often linked to neck and jaw dysfunction
  • Balance and fall prevention — especially important for older adults

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your initial physiotherapy session at Locus Health is a full assessment. Your physiotherapist will:

  1. Take a detailed history — understanding your symptoms, lifestyle, and goals
  2. Perform a physical assessment — testing your range of motion, strength, posture, and movement patterns
  3. Explain their findings — in plain language, so you understand what's going on
  4. Create a treatment plan — tailored to your specific needs and timeline

Treatment often begins in that same first session. You'll leave with a clear understanding of your condition and what steps are needed to get better.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and how your body responds to treatment. Acute injuries often resolve in 4–8 sessions. Chronic conditions or post-surgical rehab may require more. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic timeline at your first visit and adjust as you progress.

Does Physiotherapy Hurt?

Some techniques — like deep tissue work or joint mobilization — can feel uncomfortable in the moment, but should never be painful. Your physiotherapist will always work within your tolerance and explain what they're doing and why. Many patients feel significant relief even after their first session.

Is Physiotherapy Covered by Insurance?

Most extended health benefit plans in BC cover physiotherapy. At Locus Health Centre, we offer direct billing to most major insurers, so you don't have to pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement. ICBC also covers physiotherapy for motor vehicle accident injuries — we handle the paperwork.
